BOSS

The previous night all I'd remembered was Dolan slowly feeding me dinner and making sure I didn't lift a finger. Jupiter had become my shadow or made himself at home on the cushion beside me. I'd spent most of the night laughing at Dolan at being cuddle-blocked by his faithful partner. I couldn't remember a night where I didn't worry about my phone or if I'd get a full night's sleep.

The strangeness of having a person take the complete weight from my shoulders was addictive in a way. S.W.A.T. Commander Dolan Sharp was so different from what I'd assumed he'd be from the first night we'd met and the times we'd run into each other. Yes, he was a gruff man who held himself apart from people in a way to protect himself, but with me, he was all softened angles and care.

When bedtime had come around, he'd led me to his room, and I'd prepared to have our easy affection move to something more. Yet that hadn't happened. He'd stripped me out of the t-shirt he'd given me to wear and tucked me into bed. Whispered to me that he was going to take Jupiter for his last walk, and he'd come back to join me soon.

That had been the last thing I remembered before I'd awakened with a big, warm hairy body wrapped around me. As much as I didn't want to compare, the thoughts came to me. Juan took care of me, but it was in the way of rules and strict structure, harsh orders to assume the position at his feet. In the early days of our relationship, he'd cuddled me a few times, but typically any affection I received was in rewards for my obedience. As I'd said thousands of times in the past, I'd loved him, and he'd given me what I assumed I'd needed.

With Dolan, it was like being that man in my early twenties and all those hidden dreams that I'd thought were impossible for a gay man in the seventies, eighties, and even nineties. I'd admit I could Queen out with the best of them, but I'd held myself in a certain way. A pillar of my community. The strong one everyone came to, and until Dolan, I'd never understood the full scope of how much I'd taken on.

As my day at the Outreach had ended a few hours earlier, Gabby's giggles had caught my attention as I lifted my head to catch her tucked under Dolan's arm. Jupiter dancing around them as they talked. She was speaking a thousand miles an hour, telling Dolan all about her day, and just like with me, his full focus was on her. She looked so happy and safe, exactly the way I always wanted my kids to be.

While they had their moment, I'd texted Fran and Gladys and told them I wanted to take Gabby, and become her guardian and caretaker. I almost told her to start the process to take in Todd, but until this case I'd fallen into was over, I didn't think it was appropriate.
